When World Table Tennis (WTT) brought its elite Grand Smash series to Europe for the first time, they faced a critical hurdle: massive daily attendance targets in a market where the sport lacked mainstream hype. More Alliance engineered an integrated, full-funnel communication ecosystem that transformed Malmö Arena into a sold-out live entertainment phenomenon, driving 2.29 billion in potential reach.

The Friction Between Niche Credibility and Mass Entertainment
• Background: World Table Tennis (WTT) is the global commercial and events arm of the International Table Tennis Federation. Its flagship Grand Smash series was designed to elevate table tennis from a traditional sport into a premium, high-octane global sports and entertainment product. Europe Smash 2025 in Malmö, Sweden, marked the brand's historic first footprint in the European region.
• The Challenge: WTT faced a dual-front pressure cooker: exceptionally short lead times and an intensely competitive European live event landscape. They needed to secure massive global broadcast viewership while simultaneously filling a challenging stadium capacity of 10,000 ticket sales per day in a market where awareness of the Smash concept was virtually non-existent.
• The Actual Need: Beyond the immediate operational pressure of ticket sales, WTT’s deeper strategic challenge was a cultural translation problem. The sport possessed deep credibility and a passionate niche following, but it lacked the mainstream lifestyle hype required to fill major arenas. WTT didn’t just need a localized marketing campaign; they needed to shift the public perception of table tennis from a hobbyist pastime into a high-energy, must-see live entertainment spectacle, thereby establishing a permanent commercial license to operate in Europe.

The Alliance in Action – Integrated Delivery
Instead of operating as disconnected vendors, we deployed a unified multidisciplinary ecosystem where strategy, PR, digital content production, and performance marketing acted as a single organism. By aligning these capabilities, we closed the gap between top-of-mind awareness and direct ticket conversion in real-time. Participating agencies were More PR, tion, More Space, and TMP.
Key Deliverables
• “Athletes as Heroes” Storytelling: Developed compelling narrative arcs around individual players' personalities and rivalries to build emotional investment beyond core sport enthusiasts.
• High-Energy Content Engine: Produced bold, short-form visual content optimized for Gen Z and digital natives, emphasizing the dizzying speed and intensity of the sport.
• Hyper-Localized Global Amplification: Leveraged Sweden’s rich historic success in table tennis to anchor local pride in Malmö, while simultaneously routing content out to massive international markets like China, India, and the US.
• Full-Funnel Performance & OOH: Implemented synchronized paid media and out-of-home campaigns to drive immediate livestream traffic and localized ticket conversions.
Agency Perspective
The ultimate complexity of Europe Smash lay in balancing the tension between global scale and local relevance. To fill the arena daily, we had to make a globally broadcasted tournament feel like an intimate, unmissable community event for Malmö residents, while ensuring the digital footprint met the polished, premium standards of a worldwide entertainment brand.
“One of the key success factors was our ability to stay agile throughout the entire journey. Before the event, that meant continuously following ticket sales and campaign performance, adapting content and targeting accordingly, and turning the strongest-performing influencer content into paid assets. Once the tournament was underway, agility became just as important – finding compelling story angles regardless of match outcomes and responding in real time to the needs of media and content creators. That constant need to adapt is what made the project both challenging and incredibly rewarding.” – Amanda Frid, CEO at More PR
